How it began

Thrive worked with the Philips Respironics Patient Adherence Management Services (PAMS) team to increase the adherence of the Home Delivery Remote Setup (HDRS) patients during the first 90 days of sleep therapy. Philips was looking for a solution to lower costs and increase efficiency.

When Thrive first began working with Philips, it was apparent that overwhelmed patients chose to return their devices instead of trying to learn how to operate them properly. Along with the human cost of unmanaged disease state and poor outcomes because of that, this also came at a large monetary cost to Philips and their customers.

Thrive used its micro-learning methodology to introduce patients to their therapy and specific sleep equipment prior to his or her first meeting with a sleep therapist. This easily accessed education (fully-secure, no login or password needed) allowed patients to be more comfortable and ready to take in information from the therapist on how to use the device and monitor progress.

HDRS patients who receive this Thrive program, when compared to those patients who did not, show a 10% increase in adherence resulting in a reduction of returned and uncompensated devices. This translates to millions of dollars in savings for Philips and their customers.

The results

The Thrive micro-experience methodology increases the ease of learning and higher knowledge retention rates. Patients who are confident rather than overwhelmed are equipped to use their device correctly and successfully manage their chronic condition.

However, the micro-view of the patients is only one piece. When a patient’s chronic condition is managed by adhering to their device aided therapy, a direct impact is reduced healthcare system costs related to administrative costs of onboarding patients and receiving returned machinery. This machinery is expensive and has to then be recycled. People with managed chronic diseases also require fewer emergency room visits and inpatient stays, as well, along with a multitude of other factors.

The next steps

Current non-adherent patients are in the testing phase for a personalized intervention program to help them become more adherent. This greatly benefits multiple parties: the patient themself, Philips, the patient’s doctor, and the healthcare system. Preliminary testing results have been extremely encouraging.

Thrive’s core functionality is the ability to inform, influence, and measure. We are working to make this program available to sleep patients outside of the core home delivery group as well as replicating and customizing the program for other chronic disease patients.
